Newark, CA – This Tuesday, June 24th, the area surrounding the George M. Silliman Community Activity Center filled with joy, roaring engines, and smiling faces during Newark’s traditional Big Truck Day, a free event that allowed families to get up close to the city’s most impressive vehicles, share quality time together, and relive those small but unforgettable moments.

From early in the morning, excited children gathered at the event, their eyes shining as they discovered the trucks and vehicles lined up before them — machines they usually only see from afar and rarely get the chance to touch or explore. The family atmosphere could be felt everywhere: parents, grandparents, and children shared the same excitement, blending awe, nostalgia, and curiosity.

One of the day’s main attractions was an antique fire truck, a true relic that no longer circulates the streets and is now preserved for special events like this one, thanks to its historic value and pristine condition. Its classic design, polished metallic details, and vibrant red color fascinated both the children and adults alike. For many, climbing aboard this fire truck felt like stepping back in time.

The children wasted no time hopping aboard, grabbing the steering wheel, posing for photos, and imagining themselves as brave firefighters from days gone by. Meanwhile, the adults laughed, reminisced about their own childhood memories, and shared stories from the past, creating a beautiful bridge between generations.

Other impressive vehicles also made an appearance, including a garbage truck, which, though familiar in everyday life, never fails to amaze children with its size, mechanisms, and crucial role in keeping the city clean. Kids approached with wide eyes, touched the controls, and learned how the collection system works.

A small street sweeper was also on display, simple yet essential for keeping Newark’s streets tidy. Despite its modest size compared to other vehicles, it sparked curiosity among the little ones, who marveled at how such a compact machine plays a big role in keeping the city looking its best.

One of the vehicles that drew significant attention was the armored police rescue truck, marked with the word “Rescue” on its exterior. This impressive vehicle is designed for high-risk tactical operations and rescues. The children eagerly climbed aboard, explored its interior, and for a moment, felt like part of an elite rescue team as officers explained its functions and unique armored features.

Teams from Newark Public Works, Alameda County Fire, Newark Police Department, Alameda County Water District, and Republic Services were on hand to guide attendees, answer questions, and showcase the human side behind the machines that keep the city running every day.

Also present was Senator Aisha Wahab, representing California’s 10th Senate District, which includes Newark. Senator Wahab walked through the event, warmly greeting families and reinforcing the importance of organizing these kinds of community gatherings that allow neighbors to connect and learn about the services that protect and support them.

Big Truck Day was much more than a vehicle exhibition; it was a space for learning, reconnection, and most importantly, family bonding. In today’s fast-paced world, events like this remind us of the importance of slowing down, sharing special moments, laughing, and creating lasting memories together.

Many attendees agreed that more activities like this should happen throughout the year. Newark deserves more spaces where neighbors can come together, where children can learn through play, and where families can strengthen their community ties, building a city that is much more than streets and buildings.

Among engines, flashing lights, and cheerful laughter, Big Truck Day proved that while the giant vehicles impress, it’s the simple moments shared together that truly unite people — reminding us to embrace nostalgia, enjoy family time, and come together as proud citizens of Newark.
