Este 9 de diciembre marcará el punto decisivo en la negociación del salario mínimo 2026

This December 9 marks a significant day for the unveiling of the central proposals for negotiating the minimum wage of 2026, a moment that typically shapes the positions of the stakeholders at the table and paves the way for the final stages of discussion.
This date has been highlighted as crucial because it coincides with the stage where the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of the Republic provide macroeconomic indicators that allow for estimating the salary adjustment for the forthcoming year.
According to El Tiempo, this data is essential for representatives from each sector to develop proposals supported by official figures.
The negotiations began with preliminary meetings, focusing on reviewing the economic results of the year, inflation projections, and the performance of formal employment.

Based on this information, the labor unions have been outlining their expectations, while business groups are analyzing the potential impact that a significant increase could have on operational costs across various sectors. So far, the parties have engaged in exploratory discussions without disclosing specific figures.
For this stage of the process, the tripartite table needs to have elements that establish a technical framework of reference. Thus, December 9 is noted as the ‘reveal day’, when each actor officially presents their proposed increments, based on the latest economic reports. This dynamic has become an established step in previous years, serving as a customary move towards the concertation phase.
The Ministry of Labor has clarified that the indicators to be presented include the accumulated inflation, the inflation forecast for year-end, productivity, and the performance of the Gross Domestic Product. These data points will enable the establishment of a range from which the percentage increments can be formulated. In this process, the Concertation Commission is the designated body responsible for coordinating both the technical criteria and sectoral proposals, facilitating the comparison of arguments and adjustments to positions before pursuing consensus.
The meeting on December 9 also coincides with the delivery of the report from the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) on consumer prices, a variable that directly influences the final decision. Labor unions often insist that the minimum wage should guarantee the purchasing power of workers, while productive groups emphasize the need to maintain competitiveness and prevent impacts that could affect employment.
During prior meetings, the labor organizations have indicated that their proposals will be based on the cost of living, noting that inflation has been one of the most significant factors affecting household purchasing capacity. Although they have not yet disclosed a specific figure, they have reiterated that their aim is to formulate a proposal that addresses the current economic situation of the workforce.
The business representatives, on their end, have indicated that they will formulate their proposal based on productivity expectations and economic growth forecasts. It is crucial for them that the adjustment reflects the realities of each productive sector, particularly those facing challenges due to economic slowdown or slow recovery in certain market segments.
As December 9 approaches, the table will enter a phase where each participant must substantiate their proposals in detail, allowing for the identification of areas of agreement and challenges in reaching a consensus. Should an agreement not be achieved before the legal deadline, the decision will rest with the Government, following the existing legal procedure.
Additional meetings have been scheduled for the following days to evaluate the proposed submissions and work towards bridging differences. Meanwhile, expectations across various economic and labor sectors remain high regarding what will transpire on the ‘reveal day’, seen as fundamental for shaping the negotiating landscape as it concludes.
