Después de años de inundaciones, Chocontá invertirá $15.800 millones para transformar su sistema de alcantarillado
Chocontá is set to invest $15.8 million to revamp its sewage system and address the flooding that has impacted nearly 4,000 people in the urban area, as disclosed by the governor of Cundinamarca, Jorge Emilio Rey, via social media.
The local leader highlighted that Chocontá has long struggled with issues in its urban center due to the lack of a master sewage plan to separate rainwater from wastewater. This shortfall has led to recurring floods and damage to homes, obstructing the improvement of urban roads.

The governor elaborated that heavy rains cause backflow that floods neighborhoods, affecting about 4,000 residents. “Together with Mayor Javier Garzón, we are committed to resolving this issue with an investment of $15.8 million, collaboratively structured between the municipality and the department, which will put an end to flooding and establish a foundation for the future recovery of urban roads,” Rey stated.
The governor detailed that the project is already technically viable and has secured funding, with the construction contract expected to be finalized in March. The plan includes building five kilometers of network to separate rainwater and wastewater, installing a pumping system to direct water to the treatment plant, as well as constructing inspection wells, drains, and new interceptors that will double the current diameter from 8 to 16 inches.
According to Rey, this intervention will achieve coverage of approximately 35%, significantly reducing flooding in the area and addressing a longstanding issue for the community.
Rainfall has been the primary trigger for emergencies in Chocontá, especially in areas lacking proper sewage systems. Each storm raises fears of new floods, home infiltrations, and material losses for affected families. This context has made the modernization of the sewage system a priority for local and departmental authorities.
According to local media Periodismo Público, the Cundinamarca government has also announced a package of works exceeding $18.9 million aimed at transforming educational, healthcare, and sanitation infrastructure in Chocontá. These projects are already technically viable, with secured funding and defined timelines.
Construction of a multipurpose sports facility at the Agroindustrial IED
One of the priority projects is the establishment of a covered multipurpose sports facility at the Agroindustrial IED, with an investment of $1.427 million. This facility will feature a metallic structure, a thermo-acoustic roof, covering an area of 949 square meters and a play surface of 727 square meters with synthetic coating. It will include court markings for basketball, futsal, and volleyball, as well as a security perimeter. The completion is projected for November this year, as reported by Periodismo Público.
Improvements at Chocontá Hospital
In healthcare, the Cundinamarca government allocated $1.7 million for the modernization of Chocontá Hospital, which has seen a 15% increase in outpatient consultations and offers care in 11 medical specialties. The renovations will involve upgrading the waiting area, sanitary units, and roof assessments. Additionally, funding of $578 million will be used to acquire around 70 medical devices, including stretchers and specialized equipment for emergencies and outpatient care.
Periodismo Público emphasizes that this set of projects aims to strengthen comprehensive education, improve healthcare services, and foster structural solutions that enhance the quality of life for the municipality’s residents.
The modernization of the sewage system and complementary investments in education and healthcare mark a significant urban and social transformation for Chocontá, with projects that, as stated by the Cundinamarca government and documented by Periodismo Público, have secured funding and defined execution dates.
