President Gustavo Petro described several past administrations as “genocidal,” stating that he would complete his term without accumulating wealth or material possessions. These remarks, shared on social media, come amid intense political confrontations with opposition sectors, intensifying the discussion on state violence and corruption in the nation.

In a message shared via his social media, the leader claimed that “the most corrupt government in history is the one that saw Colombian citizens kill their own people.”

According to the Head of State, governmental corruption and state violence have been closely linked throughout Colombia’s recent history. Petro argued that “genocide is the worst form of corruption by any government, and several Colombian governments, including the one supported by María Fernanda Cabal, were genocidal.”

The president stressed that he has no attachment to power or money, affirming that he will leave the presidency without financially benefiting from it. “I leave power calmly; I am not addicted to power or money. I am not taking a single peso from the treasury of Colombians; I don’t even have a normal bank account. I own no estates or foreign accounts, as international investigators will confirm; I don’t own a car, and I might sell my house to build another, as I still owe the bank,” wrote Petro in his message.

Petro’s statements came in response to a prior message posted by Senator María Fernanda Cabal, who indicated on her social media: “Cepeda supported Petro, the most corrupt government in Colombia’s history. Now he acts as if it were true that he will pursue corruption. If he did so, his comrades in the current government would be the first to go to jail.”

The president explicitly cited Cabal, highlighting the responsibility of previous administrations in violent acts against civilians. Petro labeled these governments as “genocidal” and questioned the legitimacy of corruption accusations directed at his administration.

This isn’t the first time Gustavo Petro has criticized previous administrations this year. On February 16, the president posted on social media: “The most corrupt government of this century is the one that killed up to 6,402 young people, making them pass as guerrillas, while they were simply unemployed youths from the neighborhood.” This statement references the “false positives” scandal, where state agents killed civilians and reported them as combat casualties.

Petro also denounced the misappropriation of funds in the health sector, claiming that “the most corrupt government in history is the one that let tens of trillions of pesos in healthcare go to waste, disappearing into the hands of EPS owners as financial intermediaries. Corrupt is the one who turned the fundamental rights of the people, like health or pensions, into markets.”

The president mentioned figures like Alejandro Gaviria, a former minister and economist, linking him to the neoliberal model applied in the country. “An Andean educated in the USA, under a theory that was nothing but delusional math with no scientific basis, is co-author of the neoliberal model that sought to turn fundamental rights into markets, while the paramilitaries governing alongside him fattened their pockets with drug money,” Petro wrote.

In his message, Gustavo Petro reiterated that he possesses no assets abroad or significant bank accounts. “God will provide, says the Bible, and I say that the ceiling is the sky and the floor is all the land of the planet,” the president stated, alluding to his material detachment and confidence in providence.
