Vasco Da Gama and Atlético Nacional have reached an agreement for the transfer of Colombian Marino Hinestroza, who at 23 years old will be the club’s third reinforcement for the 2026 season, following a proposal of around USD 5 million for 80% of his economic rights, according to Brazilian media reports.

Hinestroza’s move to Brazil faced uncertainty due to previous negotiations with Boca Juniors, which ultimately did not materialize. In the recent press conference after the match against Flamengo in the Campeonato Carioca, coach Fernando Diniz emphasized the versatility of the winger, noting that the club had been closely following Hinestroza during his recent stint at Atlético Nacional, and remarked:

“Hinestroza is a player with characteristics similar to those of Andrés Gómez, a fast player with great physical energy and good technique, who spent two years in Palmeiras’ academy. Last year, we monitored him closely while he was at Atlético Nacional. We had already attempted to sign Hinestroza during the mid-year transfer window. I believe he is a player who can definitely come and help us.”

The reference to Andrés Gómez is significant: signed by Vasco last year, the Colombian winger became an undisputed starter and displaced Vegetti, another key player for the team, reinforcing the club’s commitment to investing in young Colombian talent.

Diniz explained that the Colombian’s profile is akin to that of Andrés Gómez, praising his speed, energy, and skill. The coach also revealed that Vasco Da Gama had attempted to sign Hinestroza in the 2025 transfer window without success.

The enthusiasm among Vasco’s management is driven by the development opportunities that Hinestroza’s arrival presents. Close individuals have noted the influence of coach Fernando Diniz, who repeatedly contacted the winger to discuss the proposed career plan and the benefits of adapting to Brazilian football. Diniz’s strategy involved citing recent examples: the progression of Jhon Arias under his leadership at Fluminense, who subsequently established himself at Wolverhampton and the Colombian national team, was used as a compelling argument to persuade Hinestroza’s entourage.

The stages leading to the agreement with Vasco included frustrated negotiations with other major contenders. Atlético Nacional had demanded an offer of USD 8 million and the loan of Kevin Serna to allow the forward’s departure, a request deemed unacceptable by the carioca club according to ge.globo.com. Hinestroza was Fluminense’s primary target to fill the void left by Jhon Arias, but the operation did not succeed.

The Diniz effect—enhanced by the successful adaptation and growth of players like Arias and Andrés Gómez under his guidance—was crucial in tipping the scales in favor of the Brazilian club. According to ge.globo.com, the good reputation of the coach in Colombia, owing to the development of young homegrown talents, had a significant impact on Hinestroza’s advisors.

This trend, as noted by ge.globo.com, was recently evident: both Andrés Gómez and Cuesta, after establishing themselves as regulars at Vasco, were called back to the Colombian national team, after being overlooked while playing in Europe.
