Officers from the Automatic Dispatch Center of the Soacha Metropolitan Police reported the arrest of two individuals for firing shots into the air while participating in a funeral procession in the municipality of Cundinamarca.

According to the official report, the incidents occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, February 18, 2025, when the officers, through the monitoring of surveillance cameras installed in the municipality, noticed unusual behavior from the two individuals who, without regard for the safety of those present, brandished a firearm and fired two shots into the air, causing panic and distress on the South highway where the funeral was taking place.

However, the rapid response from the authorities led to the capture of the two suspects who were in the second commune of the Cundinamarca municipality.

“On the South highway, in Commune 2, we managed to intercept and arrest these individuals in the act, who were riding a motorcycle. Upon conducting a search, we found a revolver with three cartridges in their possession,” the institution stated in a press release.

In videos released by the police, the two suspects can be seen riding a motorcycle alongside the hearse, showing the driver handing the firearm to his companion, who is the one firing repeatedly.

For now, the two individuals have been handed over to the Attorney General’s Office, where they will continue their legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, the National Police urged citizens to report such acts that threaten community safety.

“The Soacha Metropolitan Police will continue to work and reaffirm its commitment to the safety and wellbeing of all citizens. We encourage the community to report any actions that endanger the lives and integrity of all citizens through the emergency line 123,” the police mentioned in a statement.

This case is similar to a police operation conducted at the San Pedro cemetery in Medellín (Antioquia), where three individuals were arrested for planning to fire shots into the air during a funeral event at the location.

According to the official report, the authorities acted upon receiving information about the presence of armed individuals in the area, which enabled a surprise operation that ensured the safety of attendees.

The police intervention, coordinated through the emergency line and patrols from the Aranjuez quadrant, involved the mobilization of 20 officers, who conducted a thorough search of the attendees. This procedure resulted in the detention of two men aged 22 and 65, and a 26-year-old woman, who were charged with the crimes of manufacturing, trafficking, possession, or carrying firearms.

Interestingly, one of the apprehended individuals was dressed in a mariachi suit, and according to preliminary reports, he was responsible for firing the weapon repeatedly during the religious ceremony.

During the operation, the Metropolitan Police confiscated four firearms, including two .38 caliber revolvers and two 9 mm pistols, along with their respective ammunition.

Both the confiscated materials and the detained individuals were handed over to the Attorney General’s Office, which will carry out the necessary investigations, facing serious charges that could lead to significant penalties, depending on the results of judicial inquiries.

This incident highlights the need to enhance security measures at public events, particularly those that gather large crowds. The authorities in Medellín continue to work to ensure citizens’ peace of mind and prevent situations that could jeopardize attendees’ safety.
