President Gustavo Petro condemned the military operations by the United States in Venezuela, which took place on Saturday, January 3, 2026, resulting in the capture of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flórez.

The Colombian leader accused the United States of being the first nation to “bombard” a capital in South America.

“The U.S. is the first country in the world to bomb a South American capital in all of human history. Neither Netanyahu, nor Hitler, nor Franco, nor Salazar did it. What a terrible medal that is, because for generations South Americans will not forget (sic),” stated Gustavo Petro.

In response, Senator and Centro Democrático candidate Paloma Valencia rejected the statements made by the Colombian president.

According to Valencia, the United States did not bomb a South American capital, but rather conducted military operations on military bases and strategic points in Venezuela, allowing for what she describes as “a free Venezuela.”

“The U.S. did not bomb a South American capital; it bombed the military bases and strategic assets that a tyrant used to hold Venezuela hostage. Thus, it opened up an opportunity for a free Venezuela (sic),” affirmed Paloma Valencia.
